ARSENAL HAD TO SHOW CHARACTER TO BEAT NEWCASTLE

Written by

Arsenal had to dig deep late on Sunday evening to earn all the points as Gunners quest to win the EPL was again slipping through their fingers when they conceded a goal against the run of play in the first half of their match at the Saint James's Park.

Again Woltesmade find himself freely  heading home a goal from a corner kick in the 34th minute after Arsenal had totally dominated proceedings and had left no one in doubts that they intended to make the most of EPL slips by league leaders and last year's champions Liverpool who slipped to defeat late at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Arsenal had not won any major trophy for up to five years and are desperate to prove their potential after they had brought in eight additional signings during the summer transfer window to bolster their ranks in their bid to win something and have suddenly found themselves slipping down to five points gap behind Liverpool.

They had been second for three consecutive years while Man City and Liverpool had been champions on the three occasions and are now under pressure to prove their champions credentials.

They began the match dictating proceedings and pressing the Toons high in their box and calling Pope to make saves time and time again and even had Leandro Trossard hitting the woodwork.

Until Woltesmode goal sent the Toons fan to a rancors jubilation and they held on to their lead until the 84th minute after Arsenal had made up to twenty attempts at goal.

Spainish midfielder finally equalized for the Gunners from a Rice assist and late in injury time Brazilian defender Gabriel headed home yet again from an Odegaard corner to hand all the points to the Gunners and brought them back to the second place two points behind league leaders Liverpool.

To keep their season ambitions alive Arsenal will need to navigate through seven matches in the next twenty one days and some people have dabbed theirs the toughest fixtures for the teams playing champions league football.

Newcastle went two goals down through Gravenberch's goal in the 35th minute and again through Eketike's 46th minute goal after a controversial red card had been issued to Gordon over a challenge on Liverpool's captain Van Dyke and it appeared that we had seen the last of Newcastle.

But they fought back like wounded lions and equalized through, Guimaraes goal in the 67th minute and Osula's 88th minute goal.

Though Newcastle could not see out the 11 minutes of added time, only for Nigeria's Rio Chima Ngumoha Adigun to give Liverpool another goal so late late in the game that saw them go past the home team in the 109th minute to gave Liverpool all the three points.

For the second time in two weeks Liverpool lost a two goal lead.

In their match against Bournemouth, Liverpool were two goals up after the French International Eketike had put the 2024/25 season champions ahead and Gakpo added a second early in the second half but they allowed Bournemouth to come back into the game through a Semenyo brace.

Only the ingenuity of Italy's international Chiesa won it for them before Mo Salah add a fourth in the 94th minute.

Against Newcastle they were two goals up before ten men Newcastle fought back in an attempt to wrestle a point but again they managed to win it in injury time.

A brace from Gyokorees and another from Timber has taken Arsenal the to top of the EPL table after week two of the Premier League.

It was a game in which Arsenal was dominant even from the beginning.

Timber shot them in front on the 35th minute through a Declan Rice corner and which Timber converted to a goal then Saka doubled the tally on the stroke of half time.

Then Gyokorees struck early in the second half to take game far away from Leeds when he cut back with a shot that went beyond the Leeds United keeper.

But Timber ended the game as a contest in the 56th minute when his header off another Rice's corner rebounded and he rifled a shot past the Leeds goalkeeper for the fourth goal then Gyokorees penalty made it five goals.

ARSENAL LEADS 2-0 AT HALF TIME

Written by

Once again the Gunners take the lead at the Emirate off a corner kick by Declan Rice and Timber was right on the spot to head home another goal from a set piece.

This is becoming Arsenal trademark.

Though Leeds are not going down without a fight but they have been muscled into submission.

On the stroke of 45 minutes Timber's deft pass found Bukayo Saka running away from Gudmundson and rifled a shot past goalkeeper Perri to make it 2-0 here at the Emirate.

When Ebereshi Eze was asked to leave Arsenal, he cried for one week in disappointment.  He was just thirteen years old. He saw his childhood dream shattered, but today it's a different story. A player who was released for free is now coming back to Emirates Stadium for a 65 million tag.

No one expected that Ebereshi would become such an attacking sensation that even Arsenal, who once rejected him, would come back to pay such an amount for him. He had always dreamed of the day he would return to Arsenal, and he didn't hide it. So when Arsenal began to inquire about him, it was not difficult to say yes.

But it took so long for his club, Crystal Palace, and the Gunners to reach an agreement over what it would cost.  At one point, Tottenham Hotspur looked to hijack the deal from Arsenal, only for Arsenal to move swiftly and agree on all the terms of the club.

Arsenal had had a busy summer transfer window with several players coming in over the transfer window, among them, they have one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, Viktor Gyokeres. They also brought in Spanish international midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Chelsea and English winger Noni Madueke.

The players they brought in also included Kepa Arrizabalaga, also from Chelsea, and Christian Norgaard from Brentford, and Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia in Spain.
With all the signings, the expectations in the Emirates Stadium are that the Gunners, who have been runners-up for three seasons running, will win the league this season.

They had held on to their one-goal lead to get all three points at stake away at Old Trafford in the first week of the season.  Italian defender Calafiori had headed home a corner kick. And goalkeeper Raya had pulled off a man-of-the-match performance to help the Gunners escape with all three points at stake.

CHELSEA HELD TO A DRAW AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

Written by

Chelsea's start to the Premier League competition may be slow after playing out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday against F.A. Cup champions Crystal Palace.

After Palace had an Eze goal from a free kick ruled out, Palace was able to curtail all of Chelsea's attacks to pick a point from the encounter.

Palace, who are about to lose three of their most outstanding players in Eze, Guehi, and Mareb, but who were all on the lineup for Sunday's match, must do all they can to get a replacement.

Arsenal held on to their one-goal lead to bag their first three points of the season. The league runners up last year who scored seventeen goals through corner kicks the previous season got their only goal through no other means but a corner kick in the fifteenth minutes when Italian defender Calafiori headed home from the goal line giving the Red Devils shot stopper no chance at all, to register the Gunners first and only goal of the match.

The Amorim men didn't go down easily; they fought for the entire game and gave Arsenal a tough time, forcing David Raya to a man-of-the-match performance.

Gyokeree's debut was promising, but it ended in the 60th minute without a goal to his name, when Kai Harvert replaced him. However, Sesko started the match from the bench and did not become part of the game until the 65th minute.

Manchester United, who were on top throughout the match, had 52% of possession and had Arsenal's keeper make seven saves to earn him the man of the match.  Five yellow cards were awarded, and four went to Arsenal.

The home crowd was very vocal, and they had something to cheer about, even though their team lost, but they put up a commendable performance.

A loss to the Gunners is always a bitter pill to swallow in Old Trafford, but there's always a payback time.

Six teams are now tied up on three points at the top of the Premier League standings with one match remaining in week one of the Premier League.

\

The match lived up to the expectations as the top one on day one of the Premier League season.
