THE MERITS OF THE TAX REFORM BILL

Nigerians are debating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's proposed tax reform proposals in great detail. Many people are still ignorant of the benefits that these reforms can offer to the vast majority of Nigerians, despite the conflicts between supporters and opponents. Here is all you need to know, broken down into simple terms, from lowering taxes for small businesses to relieving the financial strain on low-income individuals. What's the commotion about? Four tax-related measures were forwarded to the National Assembly by President Tinubu. They are:

Nigeria Tax Administration Bill Nigeria Tax Bill Establishment Bill for the Nigeria Revenue Service and Joint Revenue Board. These proposals aim to update Nigeria's antiquated tax rules, but they have also sparked debate among governors and regional leaders over fairness and revenue distribution. The good news is that the Tinubu Tax Reforms are intended to help ordinary Nigerians, tiny enterprises, and the impoverished.

These benefits include low-income earners' income tax relief. You would save N84,000 a year if your annual income is N800,000 or less because you won't have to pay income tax.

2. A higher threshold for the highest possible tax rates Unlike the present threshold of N3.2 million, only individuals earning over N50 million will be subject to a 25 percent income tax rate.

3. Tax Exemptions for Small Businesses Income tax would no longer be paid by companies with turnovers under N50 million, up from the previous level of N25 million.

4. Lower Corporate Income Tax Rates  By 2026, corporation taxes for medium-sized and big businesses will be reduced from 30% to 25%.

5. Removing the "Minimum Tax" The statutory 1% gross earnings tax will no longer apply to businesses that do not report profits.

6. Less Work for Large Companies  The existing 3.75% in additional taxes is replaced with a new 2% development charge, which would directly support student loans starting in 2030.

7. VAT modifications While the federal government's portion of VAT revenue decreases from 15% to 10%, the sharing formula states will now receive 55% of the money, up from 50%

8. Progressive VAT Increase VAT rates will rise gradually from 7.5% today to 15% by 2030—but basic necessities like food and medicine remain exempt.

9. Affordable Food and Essentials No VAT will be charged on food items, electricity, school fees, or medical services, ensuring prices stay low for the poor.

10. Incentives for Gas Investment  Both related and unrelated gas projects are encouraged to increase the energy supply by tax advantages. Revolutionizing Tax Administration. The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill offers fresh approaches to guarantee justice and compliance.

11. Apprehending Tax Avoiders Bank records are used to identify high spenders for tax audits (individuals spend N25 million per month, organizations spend N100 million).

12. Flexibility in Payment It is now possible to pay taxes assessed in foreign currencies in Naira using the official exchange rates.

13. Simplified Groupings To free up regulatory authorities to concentrate on monitoring, the Nigeria Revenue        Service (NRS) would assume tax-collecting responsibilities from organizations like Customs.

14.    Guarantees of Tax Refunds  To guarantee on-time payments, cash for confirmed tax refunds will be subtracted from collections. Simplifying taxes and empowering local governments.  Equally revolutionary is the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill:

15. Local Revenue Committees To increase efficiency, LGAs will oversee taxes, penalties, and rates within their domains.

16. Harmonized Penalties and Offenses To increase compliance across the country, tax rules will now have consistent penalties.

17. Settlement of Conflicts Disputes, including those involving residency for tax reasons, will be resolved by a Tax Appeal Tribunal.

18. Advocacy for Taxpayers If tax officials treat residents unfairly, a Tax Ombudsman Office will assist them in seeking justice. The Significance of This Tinubu's reforms' proponents contend that they are pro-efficiency, pro-growth, and pro-poor.

These proposals seek to lessen Nigeria's reliance on oil revenue while promoting a more equitable and inclusive tax system by providing exemptions for small enterprises and low-income individuals as well as incentives for local economic activity. What comes next? The proposals are now awaiting public hearings after passing the Senate's Second Reading. Despite the ongoing discussion, experts concur that these reforms have the potential to improve the lives of millions of Nigerians and change the country's tax structure if properly executed.

For two hours and forty-five minutes, Rogan sat with the Tesla billionaire and engaged in a broad discussion. The Tesla CEO makes the case for Trump to Rogan throughout the episode, and Rogan seems to be mesmerized by Musk's straightforward justifications. Musk declared, "This is the last election if Trump doesn't win." "I believe you're correct," Rogan responds right away. "I think a lot of people who have been Democrats their entire lives are waking up and realizing that," Rogan adds.

Rogan

When Musk was seen on camera taking a marijuana and tobacco joint from Joe Rogan and taking a hesitant blow while talking about Tesla's ambitions for an airplane, the stock of the company briefly fell. Due to 'one puff' in September 2018, the richest man in the world was under official scrutiny. After smoking marijuana in public on the Joe Rogan Show, it was later revealed that he had to demonstrate to the US federal government that he was not a drug addict.

One of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world was caught on tape doing narcotics, and the footage swiftly went viral. Even though the medication is legal in California, where the incident occurred, Musk's single puff reduced Tesla's value by billions of dollars, with shares dropping more than 9%. Soon after, Musk had to tell the public and investors that he wasn't "on weed."

IRAN ACCEPTS DONALD TRUMP ELECTION

November 6, Tehran (MNA) – Despite the possibility of additional penalties against the Islamic Republic, Iran claims that the outcome of the US presidential election, which shows Donald Trump headed for the White House, is not a problem.

Under then-President Trump, the United States unilaterally ended a 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran in 2018 and imposed several harsh penalties on the Islamic Republic.

Iran sees no difference between Trump and his election competitor Kamala Harris, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani told reporters in Tehran Wednesday in response to Trump's likely election triumph.

"We are unrelated to the US presidential election. "Iran and the United States have consistent general policies," she stated.

Mohajerani stated, "It doesn't matter who becomes the president of the United States because all the necessary planning has been made in advance," adding that Iran is ready to handle any more sanctions.

"More than five decades of sanctions have made Iran hardened and we are not worried about Trump's re-election," she stated.  In essence, we don't perceive any distinction between Trump and Harris. Iran's internal authority has increased as a result of sanctions, and we can handle new ones."

On Wednesday, Trump formally became the 47th president of the United States, securing a second non-consecutive term over four years after leaving the White House after losing badly to Democratic opponent Joe Biden. Harris and the twice-impeached Trump, who would be the oldest president ever at the inauguration, the first felon president, and only the second in history to serve non-consecutive terms, have been in a close fight, according to polls for weeks.

In addition to facing sentence in a criminal case for paying hush money to an adult film actress, the businessman-turned-politician is still embroiled in controversy over his historic bid to win back the 2020 election that he lost to Biden.

NIGERIAN LADY TO LEAD CONSERVATIVES IN UK

Kemi Badenoch, a former British Business Secretary, defeated Robert Jenrick in the last round of voting to become the new leader of the Conservative Party. Badenoch, who is in charge of a Conservative Party suffering after its worst-ever election loss, is the first black woman to manage a major political party in the United Kingdom. After the party revealed the results on Saturday morning, she received 53,806 votes to Jenrick's 41,388 and took over as opposition leader from Rishi Sunak. To create a new policy platform, Badenoch promised throughout her campaign to bring the Conservatives back to "first principles" and begin several reviews in the upcoming months.

In addition to being the sixth Tory leader in less than eight and a half years, the North West Essex MP must work to unite the party.

At the final count of the leadership campaign, which concluded on Saturday, Badenoch told supporters, "The time has come to tell the truth." "It is time to renew and get down to business." Despite the difficulties, Badenoch enjoys a devoted following among Conservatives thanks to her straightforward style.

She appeals to a segment of the party that feels a sharp rightward shift is required to win back disenchanted voters because of her vocal views on identity politics and her wish to lessen the state's power.

During her tenure as commerce minister, she had a history of tense encounters with celebrities, media figures, and even certain government officials; yet, this has only strengthened her favor among members who are cautious of media and institutional pressures.

"The task that stands before us is tough but simple," she said, discussing the significance of her victory and her goals for the party. As His Majesty's faithful opposition, our first duty is to hold this Labour government accountable. Our second goal, which is to get ready for governance over the coming years, is equally crucial.

HOW WIZKID HONOURS SAKA ON HIS BIRTHDAY

Sixty well-known guests attended an extravagant celebration of Arsenal player Bukayo Saka's 23rd birthday.

Bukayo Saka threw a lavish party at a Mayfair restaurant to commemorate his belated 23rd birthday, telling his teammates at Arsenal that this year—20 years after the team's last championship—is the year they will finally win the Premier League. Saka went directly to Stork, his favorite pan-African restaurant in Mayfair, for a celebratory night after scoring in Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

The extravagant setup, which included balloon displays in gold and black, and the invitation-only guest list, which included his teammates at Arsenal as well as close friends and family, were the highlights of the Saturday night event. The Arsenal winger greeted 60 guests to the celebration while sporting a light grey blazer, pants, and a white T-shirt. Jerk chicken wings, jollof rice, and an unending supply of cocktails were on the menu, setting the stage for a night to remember.

Saka, who celebrated his formal 23rd birthday on September 5th, was spotted dancing with his girlfriend Tolami Benson, who was dressed in an exquisite off-the-shoulder white gown. A saxophonist performed to enhance the atmosphere of the evening while the couple reveled in the festivities.

One of the night's highlights was a live performance by Saka's close friend and British rapper Dave, who gave a private set that included his hit song Location. Wizkid, a famous Nigerian and fellow Arsenal supporter, was present and added his voice to the celebrations that evening. Saka's close buddy Wizkid joined the Gunners and England star in celebrating.

When the celebration was at its height, a three-tiered cake with black frosting and decorations was presented to the birthday boy. Saka gave a moving speech in which he thanked his friends, family, and teammates for making the evening memorable and gave Arsenal supporters something to cheer about.

Saka continued his thank you speech by saying, "You guys are even more special," to the wives, girlfriends, friends, and family there. Everybody enters smiling, and I can't express how thankful I am for every one of you. My brothers, cousins, and other family members mean the world to me. I want to thank everyone for helping to make tonight unique. Football players Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Saka's brother Yomi were present, along with Saka from Arsenal. The event took place at Stork, a restaurant that Saka has frequented for a very long time. Rapper Stormzy also has a soft spot for the eatery; in 2023, he recorded the music video for his song "Longevity Flow" there.

HOW PEPSI DEALT WITH COCA-COLA SECRETE FORMULA

For a cool 1.5 million dollars, a Coca-Cola employee offered Pepsi corporate secrets. Coca-Cola was notified by Pepsi in response. Joya Williams and her accomplice Ibrahim Dimson were high-ranking Coca-Cola employees who had access to several documents concerning the company's products and upcoming initiatives. Williams and Dimson then approached Pepsi, putting up a $1.5 million deal to sell all of the executive secrets. Regretfully, Pepsi executives informed Coca-Cola and the FBI about Williams and Dimson. Then undercover officers from the FBI dressed as Pepsi executives were sent. These undercover FBI operatives used a portion of the $1.5 million required to entice Williams and Dimson, who were then coerced into turning over the documents and the chemical vial. Dimson and Williams were apprehended with crimson hands.

The FBI proved their case in court by presenting the secrets and the proof of payment. Williams received an eight-year jail sentence in 2007 and Dimson received a five-year sentence. A Pepsi representative stated, "We acted in a way that any ethical business would.  "While competition can be intense, it must also be just and lawful. Joya Williams, the former employee of Coca-Cola, was sentenced to eight years in prison, while Ibrahim Dimson, his accomplice, was given five years. Joya Williams had attempted to sell the famous drink's secret formula to Pepsi, but Ibrahim Dimson had failed to consider that the law also protects business secrets in addition to patents.

PALMER SETS NEW EPL RECORD

After Palmer netted all four of Chelsea's goals in the Blues' 4-2 victory over Brighton on Saturday, some fans have criticized him for being avaricious. In the Premier League, Chelsea defeated the Seagulls 4-2 at Stamford Bridge, with Palmer playing at his peak. Georginio Rutter gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute, but Palmer quickly reversed the score with a hat-trick. Palmer equalized in the twenty-first minute, converted a penalty kick in the twenty-eighth to give Chelsea the lead, and finished with a magnificent free kick to complete his hat trick in the thirty-first.

Three minutes later, Carlos Baleba gave Brighton a one-goal lead again, but three minutes later, Palmer scored his fourth goal off a feed from Sancho to give Chelsea a two-goal advantage again. He made Premier League history by becoming the first player to score four goals in the first half of the game.

KEKERE-EKUN CONFIRMED AS CJN

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), acknowledged on Wednesday that the Supreme Court is overburdened with numerous issues that it often has no business dealing with. She further noted that these cases cause delays in the apex court's work. According to her, many of these cases should end in the Court of Appeal so that the Supreme Court has more room to rule on more important cases, especially those involving policy. While being vetted for confirmation by the Senate in Abuja, Kekere-Ekun mentioned several issues, including "interlocutory injunctions" and "pre-election matters," which the CJN maintained should be resolved at the Court of Appeal.

Sen. Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, oversaw the activity. The 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kekere-Ekun, who was selected as the second woman to the position, contended that the Supreme Court was constantly under pressure to conclude matters within 90 days. He observed that a significant portion of its time was spent sending a variety of cases to postpone its job, which made it more difficult for it to make crucial choices on important policy issues. The Supreme Court is a policy court that must make pronouncements on extremely unusual legal matters. She informed the senators, "I think a lot of cases, especially interlocutory matters, should end at the court of appeal."

"All other matters that are not policy matters should end at the court of appeals, including pre-election matters." Kekere-Ekun was not in favor of the idea of the Supreme Court's bench being expanded to accommodate more of these pointless cases. She clarified that despite this, people will continue to take advantage of the system since they thought there were more justices available to hear cases. She was adamant that the Supreme Court shouldn't hear a case that belongs elsewhere.

She advised politicians to follow due procedure during elections and play by the rules; according to the CJN, doing so will significantly reduce the number of pointless cases that reach the Supreme Court. Concerning corruption and the honesty of judges, the Chief Justice of Nigeria gave Nigerians her word that she would uphold discipline by making sure that dishonest judges were punished by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

"I'm renowned for my rigorous approach to discipline. I'll make sure the code of conduct is strictly followed, and I won't put up with any corruption. Kekere-Ekun further stated that the NJC would routinely evaluate judges' behavior as well as any other measures performed by judicial officers, such as promptly processing petitions that cast doubt on the officers' honesty. But the CJN recommended that the courts be "insulated from external influence" by the government taking fast care of judges' well-being to further safeguard the integrity of judicial officers.

Despite his huge transfer to Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe remained grounded when he was spotted giving his shirt to a ballboy after he was substituted. The Frenchman allowed his contract at PSG to expire and made the move of the summer by moving to the capital of Spain. The 25-year-old signed a contract that will keep him in Madrid through 2029, alongside players like Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham. Even though he is now playing for the Champions League winners and is one of the greatest football players in the world, Mbappe has a tender side that he revealed when he was replaced in his most recent game.

The attacker scored a crucial second goal in his team's 2-0 victory over Sociedad on Saturday. Before kickoff, Mbappe was seen chatting with a ball boy, who it is presumed asked for his shirt.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not lose his cool when substituted late in the match. Rather, he made time for the child who approached him on the seat and requested his shirt. The ballboy was overjoyed when Mbappe duly complied, and he sprinted off holding the valuable jersey with a gleaming smile.

Madrid won 2-0 thanks to goals from Mbappe, keeping up their perfect start to the season. Now, four points behind Barcelona, who have won five of their last six games, they are in third place. Mbappe's tenure at Madrid, though, hasn't exactly gone smoothly. The French player received criticism following his goal against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup and a 1-1 draw with RCD Mallorca at the beginning of the season.

To get back on track, he also failed to score against Real Valladolid and Las Palmas. However, he quickly doubled against Real Betis, presumably rediscovering the form that makes him one of the most dangerous marksmen in the league. With his goal against Sociedad, he now has three goals in his last two games. As the new Champions League season gets underway, he will be hoping to continue this winning streak. Mbappe isn't allowing his success to go to his head, no matter what.
