Prepaid meter customers in Nigeria have been advised by NERC to upgrade their meters by the end of 2024. Two free key change tokens would be provided to customers by their individual energy distribution companies (DisCos). The upgrade, according to the Commission, won't damage the customers' devices or cause their meters to run more quickly than usual. All Nigerian energy users who use prepaid meters have been urged to replace their meters by November 24 by the Nigerian Energy Regulatory Commission (NERC). On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the Commission sent a tweet to users of prepaid meters through its official account, reminding them of the impending deadline.

It specified that users would get two free key change tokens for the upgrading procedure from their individual power distribution companies (DisCos), which they would use to complete the upgrade. Tweeted by NERC:

It may be time for an upgrade if you have a prepaid meter. You might not be able to recharge your meter starting in November 2024. But upgrading is simple and cost-free. DisCos shall commence issuance of 2 free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) which will update your meter. It added that the forthcoming update will have no impact on the readings of your meter, and it will not result in any acceleration of its usual operational pace. It added:

The update won't change the units in your meter, and it won't make it run quicker than normal either. Recharging of meters will no longer be possible, as stated by NERC unless consumers finish the update procedure. All prepaid meter consumers were further instructed by NERC to contact their individual DisCos for further information on the upgrading procedure.
