After the debris was discovered, the US Coast Guard reported on Thursday that the submersible experienced a "catastrophic implosion".
Rear Admiral John Mauger remarked, "This is an incredibly harsh environment down there on the sea floor and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel."
